Government Launches Portal for Zero-Tariff Fish Exports

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Government of Sierra Leone is set to launch an Export Certification Portal on Friday, July 11, 2025, aimed at facilitating zero-tariff fish exports to China for local fishermen and women.

The initiative, announced by the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Princess Dugba, during a press conference held on July 8, 2025, notably reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing market access and boosting export revenues in the fisheries sector.

Minister Dugba affirmed that the portal is being launched in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy, marking a significant step in the bilateral trade relationship between Sierra Leone and China.

With the establishment of the portal, local fishers will be able to export their products to China without incurring tariffs, thereby increasing their competitiveness in the international market.

The announcement came alongside progress updates on the Black Johnson Fish Harbour Project, which received a $55 million grant from the Chinese Government, approved by the Sierra Leone Parliament in July 2021.

Despite earlier concerns about potential delays and a reduction in the grant amount, Minister Dugba assured that proactive discussions with the Chinese Embassy have preserved the project’s original scope. Construction of the Fish Harbour is scheduled to begin in September 2025.
