Christian Aid Engages Human Rights Commission on Review

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. A team from Christian Aid Sierra Leone has met with the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone to discuss the country’s progress on the 2021 Universal Periodic Review (UPR) recommendations.

The discussion focused on selected areas from the UPR, including natural resources governance, women’s empowerment, gender-aware economic policy, climate change, and women’s inheritance rights. Christian Aid had already held consultations with some local partners and was now seeking the Commission’s perspective.

Welcoming the team, Vice Chairperson Victor Idrissa Lansana Esq. explained that the Commission plays a lead role in promoting and protecting human rights in the country and has long been involved in the UPR process.

He noted that when UPR recommendations are made to Sierra Leone, the Commission works closely with ministries, departments, agencies, and civil society groups to help them understand the details of those recommendations.

He also shared that the Commission monitors how the recommendations are carried out and prepares a separate report, often referred to as a shadow report, for the next UPR cycle. This report is developed independently of the government’s version and offers a different view of the country’s progress.

The team from Christian Aid, led by Country Director Mattia Koi Dimoh, explained that their organisation works with local partners to deliver programmes focused on governance, human rights, accountability, and access to services. While they had already spoken with partner groups, they were also gathering information from other institutions involved in human rights to make their report more complete.

According to the team, their aim is to compare information gathered across several sources to make sure what they submit reflects the full picture of how Sierra Leone is handling its UPR commitments.

The meeting adds to the ongoing efforts by both organisations to follow up on the country’s UPR recommendations and involve a range of voices in tracking the progress made.
