Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Musa Kpaka, on July 21, 2025, welcomed Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, for a working visit in Sierra Leone.
The visit included a field tour through Makeni and Port Loko, where the country’s key agricultural efforts under the Feed Salone initiative were presented.
The field trip formed part of the ministry’s plan to strengthen agriculture by working with global partners. Qu Dongyu’s visit focused on understanding the progress of the Feed Salone initiative and identifying ways to support its goals. The Feed Salone program aims to improve food production, boost local farming, and reduce hunger across the country. It also encourages the use of sustainable farming techniques that can adapt to changing environmental conditions and increase crop yields.
During the tour, the FAO Director-General shared ideas and technical knowledge to support Sierra Leone’s push toward more modern and effective farming methods. The discussions also explored how the country can build on current progress to develop long-term solutions in food production and supply. Local farmers and field officers were present to engage with the visiting team, providing real-time feedback on how the program is being implemented at the grassroots level.
The visit followed an invitation from President Julius Maada Bio, reflecting the government’s continued interest in building strong partnerships that support national development goals. The collaboration with FAO is expected to play a key role in moving the Feed Salone initiative forward. The program has already begun to show early results in selected regions, and efforts are underway to expand it across the country.
With Qu Dongyu’s background in agricultural development, his visit is expected to bring added support and guidance as Sierra Leone continues to expand and improve its farming systems. The Ministry of Agriculture sees this partnership as a step toward achieving more reliable food systems that benefit farmers and communities alike. Continued dialogue between the FAO and local institutions is expected to shape future activities under the program, ensuring practical results on the ground.
