Freetown Polytechnic Students Boycott Exams Over Conditions

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Students at Freetown Polytechnic’s Jui Campus have stopped writing their ongoing exams in protest over poor campus conditions and concerns about how the school is being run.

The strike action began earlier this week, with large groups of students refusing to enter exam halls. They say they are fed up with the state of the campus and the way important issues have been handled by the administration.

The students have listed several problems that they say have gone on for too long. These include not having enough chairs and desks in classrooms, frequent electricity outages, no access to internet facilities, and not being able to view or receive their grades for completed courses. Some students also say they are worried about how money is being managed within the institution, pointing to suspected corruption and a lack of clear communication from school authorities.

In addition to these concerns, students say part of the campus land is being taken over by individuals or groups, and that buildings or activities not linked to the school are now appearing on school property. They believe this is happening without clear steps from the administration to stop it, and it has added to their frustration.

The student body has written an official letter outlining all of these issues. The letter was sent to the Polytechnic Board, with copies shared with the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education and the Ministry of Lands. In the letter, students are asking for immediate steps to address the problems and bring the situation under control.

So far, there has been no update on whether exams will resume, and students say they will not return to exam halls until their concerns are taken seriously.
