Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Proud moment for Sierra Leone! Officer Cadet Umaru Mattia has officially graduated from the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, strengthening our armed forces’ future.
Officer Cadet Mattia was part of Commissioning Course 243, which included 238 cadets in total. Of these, 203 were from the British Army, while 35 came from international partner countries. The course lasted 44 weeks and ended with the Sovereign’s Parade on Friday, 8 August 2025.
The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is known as the main training institution for British Army officers and international cadets. The course focused on leadership, military planning, physical fitness, combat readiness, and operational fieldwork.
As part of the program, Mattia and his fellow cadets took part in Exercise Dynamic Victory in Germany. This exercise served as the final test of the course. It placed cadets in unfamiliar terrain and exposed them to complex and realistic combat situations. Each cadet was required to lead missions, make fast decisions, and operate under pressure.
Training during the exercise included the use of modern military tools such as unmanned ground vehicles for casualty evacuation, drones for aerial surveillance, and AI-powered moving targets. These technologies allowed cadets to train for fast-changing battlefield environments and mission challenges.
Mattia represented Sierra Leone throughout the course, training side by side with cadets from across the world. His commissioning into the RSLAF marks the successful completion of nearly a year of military instruction and international training.
The Sovereign’s Parade, which formally commissions cadets as officers, was attended by senior military officials and diplomats, including Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr. Morie Komba Manyeh.
With his commissioning now complete, Officer Umaru Mattia joins the ranks of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces as a fully trained officer. His training and graduation reflect Sierra Leone’s ongoing participation in international military training programs and its continued presence at globally recognized institutions like Sandhurst.
