Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Jeneba J. Bangura, has emphasized that automation has significantly enhanced transparency and fairness in tax collection across Sierra Leone.
Speaking in a radio interview with Truth FM, Bangura explained that the automation system has created opportunities for both businesses and the NRA to monitor transactions in real-time. She noted that the previous manual system lacked transparency and often left taxpayers unable to verify the exact amounts levied on them.
“With automation, taxpayers can now clearly see their obligations through the system, which has helped reduce stress on businesses and eliminated arbitrary tax assessments by collectors,” Bangura said.
She added that the introduction of the Electronic Cash Ledger (ECL) machine allows businesses to track their monthly transactions through the online portal, making it easier to determine their correct tax liabilities.
Bangura further explained the NRA’s efforts in educating taxpayers. She highlighted that large businesses often hire tax firms to supervise their processes, while small and medium enterprises rely on NRA’s radio programs, mobilization drives, and education staff for guidance.
“We invest a lot in taxpayers’ education,” she stressed. “When businesses fail to pay their taxes, they face penalties. Our goal is to ensure compliance through education, so taxpayers understand their responsibilities and avoid sanctions.”
