Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Leone Stars captain Kei Kamara has expressed gratitude to the people of Liberia and Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora for their warm support during Sierra Leone’s recent international match in Monrovia.
Sierra Leone’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dealt a significant blow today following a 1-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in their CAF Group A qualifier.
Speaking after the match, Leone Stars captain Kei Kamara expressed gratitude for the local support but hinted that the defeat might signal the end of his long international career.
“The kind of reception we got here is really good. I thank the people of Liberia and the Sierra Leoneans here because they gave us so much love,” Kamara said, acknowledging the hospitality shown in Monrovia. “It’s always difficult to play our game away from Sierra Leone, but we really appreciate all the support.”
Reflecting on the loss, the veteran striker, who has been with the Leone Stars for 15 years, admitted the result was disappointing as he has yet to achieve his dream of leading the country to the World Cup.
“That’s the story of football,” Kamara stated. “I would really love to represent my country Sierra Leone… at the World Cup, but it’s sad not to be able to get that chance.”
Kamara suggested that upcoming fixtures might mark his final appearances for the national team. “If that doesn’t happen, I don’t see myself being around for much longer. I’ll just enjoy today, the next game, and then go back to my family and make a final decision. It’s truly been an honor to wear the shirt and lead Sierra Leone as captain.”
He expressed hope that his tenure has “laid a foundation for younger Sierra Leonean players.”
The Leone Stars Assistant Coach defended the team’s effort, noting that they had their moments against an experienced opponent.
“It was not our day,” the assistant coach said. “We had chances to score, and we’re proud of the boys. Obviously, today wasn’t our day, but we move on and learn from the defeat.”
He noted that the team created enough opportunities but failed to convert them, despite playing with a lot of strikers. The coach concluded by stressing that the team is still in transition but remains hopeful for better results in future games.
