Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Guma Valley Water Company (GVWC) on Wednesday, 12 November 2025, officially handed over the Managing Director position at the company’s Head Office in Freetown.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Dr. Sao-Kpato Hannah Isatta Macarthy, members of the Board of Directors, senior management, and staff.

Board Chairman Ing. David Karim Fonnie described the transition as a period of “reflection and reaffirmation of purpose,” highlighting GVWC’s strategic role in providing safe and reliable water to Freetown and the Western Area. He praised the contributions of both the outgoing and incoming Managing Directors in strengthening the company’s operations.

Outgoing Managing Director, Ing. Maada S. Kpenge, reflected on his 13 years of service, noting key achievements including the rehabilitation of the Kongo Dam, completion of the Angola Water Supply System, and progress on the Allen Town project. Under his leadership, annual revenue grew from 2 billion to over 100 billion old Leones, attributed to improved efficiency and service delivery. He also expressed gratitude to government partners and development agencies, including FCDO, MCC, and the AfDB, for their support.

Incoming Managing Director, Ing. Mariwan Kallon, thanked stakeholders for their confidence and emphasized continuity in leadership. He pledged to promote teamwork, professionalism, and accountability, while expanding water service coverage and strengthening public trust in the utility.

In her keynote address, Minister Macarthy commended the smooth transition, describing it as a demonstration of institutional maturity. She urged the new leadership to prioritize ongoing water supply projects and deliver tangible improvements in service delivery.

The ceremony concluded with a shared commitment to enhanced performance, collaboration, and public service efficiency, positioning GVWC for continued growth in meeting the water supply needs of the Western Area.
