Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Alpha Kanu has defended the decision by President Julius Maada Bio to remove officials from the previous government when he first took office back in 2018.

He said that move was the right thing to do because it reflected the real change that voters wanted to see.

During a recent interview on an online TV program, Kanu explained that when a government wins power by opposing a certain group or system, it simply can’t keep the same people it spoke against during the campaign. According to him, doing so could make the public feel misled and cause them to question whether any real change is actually happening.

Kanu pointed out that not everyone in the country thinks the same way, and that the country’s constitution was built to reflect this reality. He said that while Sierra Leone’s Parliament follows the Westminster model, the executive branch of government works more like the system used in the United States.

Speaking about the United States, Kanu said that when a new president is elected there, the old team does not wait to be sacked. They pack up and leave quickly so the new team can come in and start working without delay. He said this approach is important and believes it should also apply in Sierra Leone, especially when a new president wins by challenging the way the previous government operated.

Kanu added that it was that same team President Bio was opposing during his campaign, and that is exactly why people voted for him in the first place. So, if a new government comes in but keeps the same people, the public might start thinking that the new leader will just continue doing the same things he promised to stop.

President Bio came into office in 2018 after defeating the ruling party, and according to Alpha Kanu, this happened because the people wanted a new team and a new way of doing things. Kanu said the country’s political system mixes the British parliamentary style with the presidential system from the United States. He believes this means that the new government should bring in its own people, especially on the executive side, rather than keeping those they once opposed.
