APC Rejects Zainab Sheriff Sentencing

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) has strongly rejected the recent sentencing of Zainab Sheriff, labeling the decision as “politically charged,” deeply troubling, and poorly timed.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 14, the party expressed concern that the sentencing coincided with its high-level engagement with International Moral Guarantors, a development it said undermines ongoing efforts toward national dialogue and reconciliation.

According to the APC, the court’s decision represents “a serious affront to the integrity of the State” and contradicts the spirit of good faith discussions aimed at resolving political tensions. The party further argued that the outcome erodes public confidence in mediation processes currently underway.

“The timing and handling of this matter directly contradict the spirit of dialogue and good faith engagement,” the statement noted.

The APC maintained that it rejects both the process and outcome of the case, adding that it intends to escalate the issue through appropriate national, regional, and international channels.

Meanwhile, the party described its meeting with the International Moral Guarantors as “substantive and frank,” noting that it marked a significant step forward in its pursuit of justice, transparency, and democratic accountability. The APC said it presented evidence-based concerns, particularly regarding delays in implementing the Agreement for National Unity, recommendations from the Tripartite Committee, and what it described as a continued erosion of electoral integrity.

The party also called on its members and supporters to remain calm, disciplined, and united, assuring that its next course of action will be guided by law and national responsibility.

“The struggle for democratic integrity requires patience, strength, and strategic action, not impulse,” the statement concluded.

The sentencing of Zainab Sheriff has continued to generate mixed reactions across the country, further intensifying political discourse around governance, justice, and democratic processes in Sierra Leone.
