Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), in collaboration with UNICEF Sierra Leone and the Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation (MoCTI), organized a two-day seminar aimed at promoting Digital Public Goods (DPGs) in Sierra Leone.
The event took place at DSTI and UNICEF’s Digital Learning Hubs located at Ernest Bai Koroma University in Makeni and Eastern Technical University in Kenema.
The seminar gathered students, lecturers, and tech trainers to explore the concept of Digital Public Goods, emphasizing their practical applications in everyday life.
Participants discussed how Sierra Leone can transition from merely adopting technology to actively building and contributing to open-source solutions.
Hawa Kallon, a Software Engineer at the Christiex Foundation, and Abdul Rahim Jalloh, DPG Lead at MoCTI, led the sessions. They explained how the DPG Pipeline is addressing real challenges by providing young innovators with technical guidance, mentorship, and funding opportunities to develop their ideas.
Kallon highlighted the importance of empowering the next generation of creators, educators, and developers to design solutions that are tailored to the needs of Sierra Leone.
In addition to discussions on DPGs, faculty members voiced the need for universities to update curricula and prioritize continuous professional development. This, they argued, is essential for equipping graduates with the skills required in today’s digital landscape.
The seminar aimed to create a collaborative environment for open conversations and hands-on learning, fostering a culture of innovation that aligns with Sierra Leone’s digital transformation goals.
