Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. First Lady of Sierra Leone, Madam Fatima Maada Bio, has reaffirmed her commitment to women’s empowerment as she joined members of the Eastern Region Women’s Network (ERWEN) at their fundraising dinner held at the Freetown International Conference Centre.

Speaking at the event, Madam Bio described herself as a proud daughter of Kono and emphasized the importance of supporting initiatives that uplift women and girls. She noted that the fundraising dinner was not only a social gathering but also a movement calling for stronger action against gender-based violence and increased investment in women’s empowerment.

During the ceremony, the First Lady made a personal and symbolic contribution donating financial support on behalf of herself and President Julius Maada Bio to aid ERWEN’s flagship project: the construction of a skills training center in Kono District. The facility is expected to equip women and girls in the region with practical skills and economic opportunities that foster self-reliance.

Madam Bio was also honored with a special recognition award for her longstanding work in advancing women’s rights. She expressed gratitude to the leadership and members of ERWEN, particularly the organization’s President, Madam Isatu J. Kabba, for championing women-centered initiatives across the country.

She further extended appreciation to President Bio for his continued support toward gender equality and policies that promote the welfare of women and girls in Sierra Leone.

The event brought together influential women from across the Eastern Region and beyond, strengthening a united front in the fight against gender-based violence and in the quest to economically empower women nationwide.
