Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has forcefully defended the city’s sanitation efforts, pushing back against claims that a recent cleaning “overdrive” is a temporary facade.
The response came after the Freetown City Council (FCC) posted photos online of a major cleaning operation conducted by its street sweepers on Monday. The team worked at key locations including Model Junction, Dwazark Junction, Jomo Kenyatta Road, and from the King Harman Road Roundabout to The Light.
In the post, the Council urged citizens to play their part by registering with approved waste service providers and refraining from littering, stating, “A clean Freetown means not throwing dirt on the streets.”
However, the publicity prompted skepticism from a concerned citizen, Jaims C Masakhoi, who questioned the timing and sustainability of the effort. “Its interesting how this proposal to create localities in Freetown has suddenly sent the FCC into cleaning overdrive,” Masakhoi commented, asking if the work was a genuine effort or “just another facade.”
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr issued a direct rebuttal, asserting that the work is neither new nor a reaction to political developments.
“Freetown City Council has been sweeping over 100 streets every day for over 4 years,” the Mayor stated in her reply. “Posting photos of the hard work of our dedicated sweepers on a daily basis is now being done to dispel false narratives.”
She emphasized the consistency of the council’s work, adding, “The sanitation work is not new; daily sweeping has been consistent for years and will continue to be delivered by FCC.”
