Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. As Sierra Leone approaches the 64th anniversary of its independence, the Office of the President has announced that the milestone will be commemorated through a series of religious services and a national address, all aimed at fostering unity and reflection under the theme: “Deepening National Consciousness and National Cohesion in a Troubled World.”
The official commemoration kicks off on Friday, 25th April 2025, with special Muslim prayers to be held in mosques across the country. These will be followed by Christian services on Sunday, 27th April 2025, held in churches nationwide, as part of a coordinated effort to unite citizens in prayer and remembrance.
Government officials, including Ministers, Deputy Ministers, and Heads of Departments and Agencies, have been instructed to participate in these services within their local places of worship. The move highlights the government’s emphasis on spiritual reflection as a path to national unity and progress.
In line with tradition, His Excellency the President will deliver the Independence Day Address to the Nation on Sunday, 27th April, beginning at 7:00 a.m. The address will be broadcast multiple times throughout the day, giving citizens across the country the opportunity to tune in and reflect on the President’s message of hope, resilience, and collective development.
“The 64th Independence Anniversary offers us a solemn opportunity to reflect on how far we have come as a nation, and more importantly, where we are headed,” the Office of the President noted. “In a world facing complex challenges, this year’s theme urges Sierra Leoneans to stand united in fostering peace, national identity, and shared prosperity.”
Citizens are encouraged to participate in these moments of collective reflection, honoring the sacrifices of those who paved the way for independence and reaffirming a national commitment to unity, stability, and development.
Sierra Leone gained independence from British colonial rule on 27th April 1961, a historic moment that continues to shape the country’s democratic journey and aspirations for a more cohesive and progressive society.
