Government Launches National Surgical Healthcare Plan

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone has stepped onto the regional healthcare stage with the official launch of its National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plan (NSOAP), a comprehensive roadmap designed to transform surgical healthcare and save lives across the country.

The plan was first unveiled in Freetown last week by the Honourable Minister of Health, Austin Demby, PhD, MPH. Its significance was subsequently highlighted days later at the 3rd Pan African Surgical Healthcare Forum (PASHeF) in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

Representing the Minister of Health at the forum was Dr. Mustapha Kabba, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer in charge of clinical services. Dr. Kabba presented the NSOAP to the pan-African audience, emphasizing the vision driving the initiative.

“At the heart of the NSOAP is moving beyond statistics to focusing on the profound impact on the lives of ordinary Sierra Leoneans,” Dr. Kabba shared, relaying the Minister’s core message.

The NSOAP is the first national strategy of its kind for Sierra Leone, offering a comprehensive framework for improving surgical, emergency, and critical care across the nation.

The launch in Freetown last week marked a historic step for the nation’s health sector, signaling the government’s commitment to prioritizing surgical care as an essential component of the universal health coverage agenda.

The strategy is expected to address critical gaps in infrastructure, human resources, equipment, and access to affordable surgical services, which are vital for treating everything from injuries and complications during childbirth (obstetrics) to acute infections.

The presentation at the PASHeF forum positions Sierra Leone as a leader among African nations adopting integrated strategies to strengthen surgical systems as a backbone of effective public healthcare.
