Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Sierra Leone female national team, Sierra Queens goalkeeper, Hannah Juana was awarded as the best goalkeeper in the just-concluded WAFU Women’s Tournament in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
The shot-stopper guided her team to their first-ever major trophy after defeating Senegal 1-0.
Juana recorded three woman of the match awards in both the group stages and knockout phases becoming the first goalkeeper in the competition’s history to complete that feat.
Sierra Queens defeated Senegal on Saturday evening with Salamatu Kamara’s loan strike from the penalty spot. The team, which is made up of local players, is a testament of the resilience and significance of investing in female football.
Almost all of the players play in the local Sierra Leone female football league which was inaugurated about three years ago. The league has been crucial in shaping female football talents into professionals.
Meanwhile, the Sierra Leone government has promised to continue its investment in the sport for sustainability and increased opportunity for girls and women in the West African nation.
