Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Institute for Legal Research and Advocacy for Justice (ILRAJ) has strongly condemned remarks attributed to Mr. Lahai Marah, the All People’s Congress (APC) District Party Chairman for Falaba, during a recent tripartite engagement session held at the Falaba District Council Hall.
Mr. Marah reportedly stated that the APC “has the capacity to resist the military and the police,” referencing the use of advanced technological warfare including drones and suggesting that private military services could easily be acquired. ILRAJ described the comments as “a grave and direct threat to national security, public order, and the foundational principles of the rule of law.”
“These remarks not only incite potential violence but also flagrantly undermine the democratic institutions that safeguard our nation’s stability,” the organization said. “Such provocative rhetoric is profoundly dangerous and incompatible with the norms of a democratic society.”
ILRAJ warned that Mr. Marah’s statements risk heightening political tensions and undermining Sierra Leone’s post-war reconciliation gains, including the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and ongoing electoral reforms.
The organization expressed concern that a forum intended to foster constructive dialogue and strengthen electoral stability ahead of the 2028 elections was instead used to promote militaristic defiance of state authority.
“It is deeply regrettable that a platform designed to build trust among stakeholders was hijacked for statements that suggest confrontation and threaten peace,” the statement added.
ILRAJ called on the APC leadership to publicly distance itself from Mr. Marah’s remarks, take appropriate disciplinary action, and institute measures to prevent further inflammatory pronouncements. The organization also urged all political actors regardless of party affiliation to reject divisive rhetoric and recommit to peaceful, lawful, and collaborative engagement
