Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Steven Grudda, Country Director of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), has reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s efforts to improve its energy sector, stressing that reliable electricity is essential for economic growth, social development, and foreign investment.
Grudda explained that the MCC, as an agency of the U.S. government, partners with countries that demonstrate strong governance and investments in their people while creating a conducive environment for American investors. He noted that Sierra Leone’s persistent electricity challenges continue to hinder national progress.
“Unreliable power is a challenge in any country. It means schools, hospitals, businesses, and even homes do not always have the electricity they need,” he said. “It is a challenge to investment that makes life harder for everyone that’s where MCC comes in.”
According to Grudda, the MCC compact with Sierra Leone aims to upgrade the electricity system to make power more reliable, affordable, and accessible across the country. He emphasized that the initiative goes beyond improving electricity supply.
“This is not about keeping the lights on. It’s about creating opportunities for American and Sierra Leonean businesses to partner,” he explained.
Grudda highlighted the direct impact of reliable electricity on everyday life: children can study at night, hospitals can save lives, and businesses can expand and create jobs.
He reaffirmed that the U.S. Embassy remains committed to a strong and lasting partnership with Sierra Leone, with both nations working toward a brighter and more prosperous future.
