Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Minister Sannoh Launches Major Youth Skills Development Initiatives

The Minister of Youth Affairs, Ibrahim Sannoh, has unveiled a series of transformative initiatives aimed at strengthening middle-level manpower and promoting practical skills acquisition among young people across Sierra Leone.

Speaking during the Bo Civic Day Series, Minister Sannoh said the ministry’s programs are informed by findings from the Status of the Youth Report, which provides data-driven insights into youth development priorities nationwide. He stressed the need for evidence-based and results-oriented projects that create real opportunities for Sierra Leonean youth.

“In partnership with the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, we have developed a Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) Policy that encourages every young person to learn at least one practical skill,” Minister Sannoh explained. “The only way you can be employable is when you learn something,” he added, urging young people to embrace skill-based education.

Among the ministry’s new programs, 1,500 commercial bike riders across six districts will benefit from a UNDP-supported skills training scholarship initiative. In addition, a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Milton Margai Technical University will facilitate 21 short courses in carpentry, hairdressing, masonry, and photography all designed to enhance employability and entrepreneurship.

The Ministry also plans to award 500 scholarships to outstanding WASSCE students nationwide to pursue Information and Communication Technology (ICT) studies at three leading international universities.

Minister Sannoh reaffirmed his commitment to youth empowerment through practical education.

“We want to roll out as many skills programs as possible, because the only way we can develop this country is through young people who make up the majority acquiring practical skills,” he concluded.
