NASSIT Director General Presents Informal Sector Pension Blueprint to Labour Minister

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Director General of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), Mohamed Fuaad Daboh, presented the blueprint for the proposed Informal Sector Pension Scheme to the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Honourable Mohamed Rahman Swarray, in Freetown on Wednesday, 16th April 2025.

The presentation took place at the Ministry’s conference room at New England Ville.

During the presentation, Mr. Daboh thanked the Minister and his team for their quick response and commitment to supporting NASSIT. He mentioned that the event is an important step in improving the living standards of informal sector workers in Sierra Leone.

Mr. Daboh explained that the blueprint is the result of a team effort by the Technical Committee, which included people from different ministries, departments, and agencies. The committee held consultations with people across the country to make sure the scheme meets the needs of informal workers.

He stated that the blueprint will now move forward to the Steering Committee for review, then to Cabinet for approval, and will involve the Attorney General’s Office to draft a bill for Parliament.

Mr. Daboh also encouraged all stakeholders, particularly the Technical Committee, to keep up the work as the blueprint moves forward to become a reality for many workers across Sierra Leone.

In his response, Minister Swarray thanked Mr. Daboh and the Technical Committee for their hard work. He expressed that improving the welfare of informal sector workers is an important goal for President Julius Maada Bio. Minister Swarray also mentioned that talks with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and countries in the Caribbean Sub-Saharan region showed that Sierra Leone is moving ahead in formalizing the informal sector and working to improve the lives of these workers.

The Minister promised to stay involved in the next steps of the project, saying he is confident the scheme will help provide more security for informal workers in Sierra Leone.
