Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Njala University has launched a major partnership with Afrimoney, the mobile money division of Africell, aimed at enhancing fee payments for its students.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, by Vice-Chancellor and Principal Alhaji Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma, who outlined the initiative as a key component of the university’s digital transformation agenda.
Professor Koroma affirmed that the new payment system is designed to enhance transparency and efficiency within university operations. He noted that the system has undergone extensive testing to ensure it meets high standards of cybersecurity and accountability.
He confirmed that the integration will provide students, especially those in remote areas, with easier access to payment options without the need to travel to banks.
Afrimoney’s CEO, Martison Obeng-Agyei, praised Njala University for its pioneering role in the digitalization of higher education in Sierra Leone. He confirmed that the partnership makes Njala the first university in the country to fully incorporate Afrimoney into its payment processes.
Obeng-Agyei reassured the university community that transactions through Afrimoney are secure and efficient, with each payment generating a unique digital code for accuracy and real-time confirmation.
Dr. Thomas Philip Songu, Director of ICT at Njala University, emphasized the cost-saving and practical advantages of this digital shift. He argued that reducing reliance on paper-based processes will free up resources for other essential needs within the institution.
During the launch event, a question and answer session allowed staff and students to voice their concerns about accessibility and security.
University officials and Afrimoney representatives addressed those issues, promising ongoing training for staff and public education initiatives to facilitate a smooth transition to the new payment system.
