Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The United Nations (UN) has appointed the Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) of Sierra Leone, Mrs. Jeneba J. Bangura, to its Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters.
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres made the announcement, as detailed in a UN press release dated July 30, 2025.
Bangura’s appointment is seen as a historic achievement, making her the second Sierra Leonean and the first Sierra Leonean woman in over two decades to serve on this esteemed global body. Among 25 distinguished tax experts selected worldwide, she secured the noteworthy second position.
The UN Tax Committee is renowned for its crucial role in shaping international tax cooperation focused on fairness, inclusivity, and development.
Commending the Committee’s significance, Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua, emphasized its pivotal role in assisting countries to align tax policies with their developmental goals.
The Committee acts as a forum where experts collaborate to address contemporary challenges such as reforming tax treaties for the digital era, ensuring equitable taxation in industries like extractives, and exploring mechanisms for wealth taxation. By fostering collaboration among experts from diverse backgrounds, the Committee strives to develop innovative and effective solutions applicable across varied tax systems.
Expressing her gratitude for the prestigious appointment, Bangura lauded the visionary leadership of President Julius Maada Bio in promoting women’s representation in leadership roles and elevating Sierra Leone’s stature on the global stage.
She extended heartfelt appreciation to President Bio, Minister of Finance, Sheku Fantamadi Bangura, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Musa Timothy Kabba, as well as the efforts of Sierra Leone’s diplomats at the UN Permanent Mission, notably Ambassador Imran Kanu and assisting staff.
