Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The National Revenue Authority (NRA) together with the Ministry of Health through the National Public Health Emergency Management Agency (NPHEMA), has conducted a two-day sensitisation and orientation session on Mpox for staff.
The move is believed to be geared towards strengthening public health security and border disease surveillance proactively.
Held from 21–22 May 2025 at various NRA departments, the training was themed “Case Definition for Community-Based Surveillance of Mpox Viral Disease in Sierra Leone.” It aimed to enhance the capacity of NRA personnel to identify, prevent, and respond to potential cases of Mpox, particularly at critical entry points and administrative levels.
Participants received hands-on guidance through practical demonstrations and comprehensive briefings on transmission risks, symptom recognition, and the protocols for timely reporting and containment.
The initiative marks a growing partnership between the health and revenue sectors, reflecting a united front in protecting Sierra Leone’s population and economic stability through early detection and coordinated response efforts.
The collaboration shows the importance of integrated health-security strategies in safeguarding both public health and national revenue systems.
Mpox is considered as a gradual health concern in Sierra Leone as the country has now recorded at least 3,000 cases since January. The African Centre for Disease Control (Africa CDC) warned weeks ago that the West African country is witnessing an unprecedented surge in the number of cases.
