Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) on Tuesday, 6th January 2026, demolished several illegal and makeshift structures across parts of Freetown as part of a nationwide safety operation aimed at improving road safety, easing traffic congestion and enhancing public security.

The operation, led by Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, follows President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s declaration of 2026 as the “Year of Action.” Police authorities said the exercise is in line with the Sierra Leone Police Strategic Development Plan (SDP), particularly Goal One, which focuses on public safety and crime reduction.

According to the police, the demolition targeted structures illegally erected on the Right of Way (ROW) and beneath the Hill Cut overhead bridge in the Western Area. The police said these structures had obstructed free movement of vehicles, contributed to traffic congestion and posed safety risks to road users.

Speaking during the operation, police officials said the action gives effect to key interventions under the SDP, including crime reduction and improved traffic management. They noted that reclaiming the Right of Way is necessary to ensure safer roads and orderly movement within the city.

During the exercise, the police also dismantled an illegal settlement located under the Hill Cut bridge, which authorities said had become a centre for drug trade and trafficking. Police sources described the settlement as a serious threat to community safety and national security.

The enforcement drive was also extended to IMATT, Regent and areas surrounding the American Embassy, where unregulated timber trading activities had encroached on the Right of Way. The police said these activities caused persistent traffic congestion and exposed pedestrians and motorists to unnecessary danger.

The Sierra Leone Police said the ongoing operation is part of a broader national effort to reclaim public spaces, enforce traffic regulations and reduce crime in line with government policy and the police Strategic Development Plan.

Police authorities reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the operation across the country and urged residents, traders and road users to cooperate with law enforcement and comply with traffic and public safety regulations as the Year of Action continues.
