Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Chairman, and chief inspector of the police in the Portee and Rokupa communities have expressed concern over the Portee Police Post’s deteriorating state, claiming it is not enough for efficient law enforcement.
Community Chairman Idrissa Sesay and Chief Inspector Gibilla Morlai Conteh, Officer in Charge of the police station, said the facility is completely dilapidated, explaining some threats it poses to security operations and public safety.
The station, which is currently adjacent to a primary school building, has suffered extensive structural damage, including breaks partitions and seriously exposed electrical cabling.
Chief Inspector Conteh said that the space that the police shared with the school disturbs police work, and the prison cells used to imprison detainees frequently overflow after heavy rains, threatening effective investigations.
Due to these circumstances, offenders are temporarily kept at the Approved School Police Post before being moved back to Portee, a process Conteh warns is dangerous without armed escorts.
Despite frequently discussing the issue with senior police officials, no action has been taken. Chairman Sesay congratulated the officers for their dedication under challenging circumstances, and talked about the urgent need for a new station. He said that the community will offer land if Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu permits the construction of a new institution.
Residents and community heads are now calling for immediate action, warning that the bad status of the police station deters moves to protect both lives and property in the two settlements, which are home to over a thousand people.
