President Bio Arrives in New York for UN Engagement

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. President Julius Maada Bio has arrived in New York to attend high-level discussions at the United Nations Security Council, where Sierra Leone is serving as the President for the month of November 2025.

The President expressed his enthusiasm for the visit, stating he was “Excited to have arrived in New York for the United Nations Security Council engagement with Sierra Leone as President of the UN Security Council for November! Looking forward to highly productive discussions ahead.”

Sierra Leone’s November presidency is its second tenure at the helm of the Security Council, following its first in August 2024. This presidency is part of the country’s second and final year as a non-permanent member, marking its return to global diplomacy after two decades.

Sierra Leone’s agenda for the month focuses on four critical issues: conflict-related food insecurity, climate-related security risks, the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW), and the inclusion of youth in peace and security.

The visit follows a recent phone conversation between President Bio and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who commended Sierra Leone’s leadership and progress in governance and peacebuilding.

President Bio’s engagement follows the successful high-level open debate on the proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW), which was chaired by Foreign Minister Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba on November 11. During that debate, Minister Kabba highlighted that SALW are among the leading causes of civilian casualties and are intensifying terrorism and organized crime in regions like West Africa and the Sahel.

The country also recently began its role as Co-Chair of the Group of Friends of Action on Conflict and Hunger alongside Ireland, collaborating to address the intersection of conflict and food insecurity.

The government in Freetown views its Security Council tenure as a “historic opportunity” to project Africa’s priorities and strengthen its international credibility.

The coming meetings are expected to consolidate diplomatic visibility and deepen advocacy for multilateral reforms, particularly in the face of new and ongoing global crises.
