President Bio Attends Kormende Union Islamic Conference

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Kormende Progressive Union (KPU) recently held its 6th Annual International Islamic Prayer Conference in Kpadebu, Dama Chiefdom, Kenema District, bringing together Islamic scholars, religious leaders, and Muslim faithful from across West Africa.

The conference was organised under the theme “The Kormende’s Role in Shaping Islamic Identity in West Africa.”

Participants attended from Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, and other parts of the sub-region, reflecting the growing regional profile of the KPU and the cross-border ties within the Kormende Muslim community.

The event was attended by President Dr. Julius Maada Bio and First Lady Madam Fatima Jabbie Bio, along with senior government officials and invited international guests.

Their presence underscored the national significance of the gathering and its emphasis on religious unity and peaceful coexistence.

In welcoming remarks, Paramount Chief Momoh Fowai thanked the President and other dignitaries for attending the conference. He used the occasion to highlight development challenges facing Dama Chiefdom, including the need for improved road infrastructure, enhanced telecommunication services, and better access to clean water. He specifically called for the construction of the Kenema Zimmi Road as a priority project for the area.

Providing an overview of the organisation, Mohamed Fuad Daboh outlined the mission and activities of the Kormende Progressive Union. He noted that the KPU seeks to promote Islamic values, unity, and social development within the Kormende community and beyond.

According to him, the annual six-day conference rotates among host locations in the sub-region and features Qur’anic recitations, lectures by Islamic scholars, and prayers for peace and development.

In his keynote address, President Bio commended the KPU for organising the conference and acknowledged its role in fostering religious harmony and regional unity. He emphasised the importance of Islamic identity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, and reaffirmed the government’s support for initiatives that contribute to national cohesion and community development.

The conference concluded with special prayers offered for Sierra Leone, its leadership, and the continued growth of the Kormende

Progressive Union. Organisers described the event as a platform for spiritual reflection, dialogue, and strengthened ties among Muslim communities across West Africa.
