Sierra Leone Begins Second Year at the UN Security Council

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone on Saturday, 1st November 2025, officially began its second and final year as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, marking a continuation of its return to global diplomacy after two decades of absence from the Council.

During its first year, Freetown’s delegation, led by Ambassador Michael Imran Kanu won plaudits for its active engagement in African peace and security debates, particularly on Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the reform of global peacekeeping operations. Sierra Leone also co-chaired key discussions on conflict prevention and championed the inclusion of youth and gender perspectives in peacebuilding frameworks.

Recently, the country participated in the adoption of the landmark UN resolution backing Morocco’s stance on the Western Sahara territory.

However, analysts note that despite these efforts, the country’s influence on major Security Council outcomes remained limited by the realities of global power politics. Its calls for reform of the Council’s veto system and a greater African voice in decision-making were largely overshadowed by divisions among permanent members over Ukraine, Gaza, and the Sahel.

As Sierra Leone enters its second year, expectations are high for it to consolidate gains made in diplomatic visibility and to deepen its advocacy for multilateral reforms. The government in Freetown has described its tenure as a “historic opportunity” to project Africa’s priorities on the world stage while strengthening Sierra Leone’s international credibility after years of post-war reconstruction.

The coming months are expected to test that resolve as the Council grapples with new and ongoing crises, offering Sierra Leone another chance to demonstrate that small states can still play a principled role in shaping global peace and security.

In another news, Sierra Leone has also assumed the Co-Chairmanship of the Group of Friends of Action on Conflict and Hunger from Ecuador, who has served alongside Ireland for over two years.

This means that Sierra Leone and Ireland will collaborate to address issues of conflict and hunger at the UN.
