The Ministry, in shedding light on the cases as confirmed in various districts across the country, identified the Western Area as the epicentre of the outbreak with cases steadily rising as the Rural District records one hundred and twenty-nine (129) cases and the Western Urban recording four hubdred and seventy (470) cases in the Western Urban.

The official report further confirmed that Bo City maintained a total number of Four (4) confirmed cases, and an increase of Twelve (12) cases in Bombali. four (4) cases in Kenema, two (2) in Moyamba, eight (8) in Port Loko, three (3) in Tonkolili, with an increase of two (2) in Kambia, and one (1) in Karene, One (1) in Pujehun, and three (3) in Kono District.

However, as confirmed in the recent report made by the Ministry, the Western Area has experienced a vast increase in new cases as the new record confirms eighty (80) new cases for the Western Area, and just Five (5) new cases for the provincial areas. As recorded, there have been no M-pox cases in Bonthe, Falaba, Kailahun, and Koinadugu.

The Health Ministry said the disease is more prevalent among males with four hundred and twenty-seven (427) cases confirmed and with the remaining three hundred and thirty-six (336) being females.

The report, which was made on Saturday, 26th April, 2025, admonished the public to call on the free toll number 117 for emergency reports on any MPOX case or cases.

Health experts have warned that the disease is endemic in Sierra Leone after the country recorded its first case back in 1970 -the same year the Zaire strain was discovered.

Sierra Leone is currently on a public health emergency as a response to the outbreak. Health authorities have increased surveillance, case investigation and community engagement to stop the spread of the outbreak.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry is currently rolling out vaccination of health workers and other first responders to curtail the spread of the outbreak. Sierra Leone was among the most affected countries of the West Africa Ebola outbreak about a decade ago. The virus weakened the health system and the economy of the country.

Experts have warned that complacency with this Mpox outbreak could spur a recurrence of the Ebola effect on the health system and possibly the economy.
