Sierra Leone Hosts African Union Delegation, Others for World Immunization Week

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Dr. Sania Nishtar, and officials from the African Union paid a visit to Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, earlier today.

The meeting took place in Freetown ahead of the official launch of this year’s World Immunization Week, which Sierra Leone is hosting.

The event carries the theme, “Humanly Possible: Immunization for All is Humanly Possible.”

During the meeting, Dr. Demby welcomed the visiting team and shared Sierra Leone’s efforts to protect its population through vaccines. He said that the country is working hard to prevent any deaths caused by diseases that can be stopped through vaccination.

“We used to lose many children to illnesses that vaccines can now stop,” Dr. Demby said. “Today, more of our children are growing up healthy and reaching their fifth birthdays.”

Sierra Leone currently has a national vaccination coverage of over 90 percent. The country has been chosen by the African Union Commission to host the 2025 Immunization Week. This decision was based on its role in making vaccines easier to reach for people across the country and helping to share good practices across Africa.

The visit by Gavi and the African Union comes as the country prepares for activities to mark the global health week.
