Sierra Leone Judiciary Engages Afrosai-E on Audit Capacity

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice, His Lordship Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda, has reaffirmed the Judiciary’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency during a courtesy visit by Madam Meisie Nkau, Chief Executive Officer of the African Organisation of English-Speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E).

The meeting, held at the Chief Justice’s Chambers on Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown, focused on strengthening institutional collaboration and reinforcing the pivotal role of independent bodies in improving public service delivery. Justice Kamanda underscored that financial independence remains essential for the effective functioning of these institutions.

“We need financial independence. We must take practical steps to achieve this so that we can effectively perform our duties as independent institutions,” he said. The Chief Justice commended AFROSAI-E for its continued support toward enhancing the independence and efficiency of Supreme Audit Institutions across Africa, noting the crucial oversight functions auditors play in ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.

Justice Kamanda also welcomed AFROSAI-E’s commitment to capacity building, affirming that the Judiciary is willing to partner in strengthening staff competencies to boost productivity and institutional performance.

In her remarks, Madam Nkau thanked the Chief Justice and Judiciary leadership for their efforts in promoting transparency and accountability. She explained that AFROSAI-E, established in 2005, works to strengthen public audit institutions in English-speaking African states through professionalisation, training, and quality assurance. The organisation also promotes peer learning, knowledge exchange, and the adoption of best practices in public sector auditing.

“AFROSAI-E plays an enabling role in the region by supporting members to perform their mandates effectively and ensuring both individual and institutional capacities are strengthened,” Madam Nkau said.

The meeting was attended by Supreme Court Justices, the Acting Deputy Auditor General, and senior management staff of the Judiciary.
