Sierra Leone Parliament’s Library Turns Market

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Library of Sierra Leone’s Parliament has gradually transformed to a market square, thus making it extremely difficult for workers and researchers to utilise it.

Day in and day out, the library is being occupied by workers who are in the habit of causing noise to the dissatisfaction of readers and researchers.

This unprofessional and uncouth behaviour exhibited by the said workers in the library has degenerated to the crecedo.

On Friday, 11th July 2025, this writer was undertaking research work when the entire library reverted to continuous noise.

The Library of Sierra Leone’s Parliament is always noisy, with workers talking above their voice while others were busy watching movies via their mobile phones.

The frequent negotiations between sellers and buyers in the library actually remind me about Congo Market, where the duo shout above their voices to gain hegemony.

The scenario in Sierra Leone’s Library is akin to any market square. ” Workers argue on a daily basis, giggle, shout, and the sound from a movie always eclipsed the Library.

As a layman, I am with the avid conviction that a library is a place or collection where books, magazines, digital resources, and other materials are kept for reading, studying, or borrowing.

We have various types of libraries, include: public library, school/ academic library, digital library and special library. Apparently, librarians have the following roles: information management, educator/guide, technology facilitator, community supporter, custodian of knowledge.

Therefore, they are expected to perform the following responsibilities: cataloguing and classification, reference and research assistance, collection development, library administration, user education, technological management, policy implementation, preservation and conservation , event and. coordination.

The workers attached to the Library of Sierra Leone’s Parliament should be mindful of the fact that libraries exist not for profit but for public service and enrichment.
