Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone is among the nations participating in the 7th Global Occupational Safety and Health Conference (GOSH7), held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from May 4th to 6th, 2025.
The theme of the conference, “The Future of Occupational Safety and Health,’ brought together global experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to promote safer and healthier working environments across sectors. The conference provided a platform for sharing best practices, exploring emerging OSH challenges, and leveraging technology to enhance workplace safety.
The Director of Occupational Safety and Health at the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mr. Abdul Karim Conteh, representing Sierra Leone, actively engaged in scientific and technical discussions, contributing to efforts to strengthen occupational safety and health (OSH) practices globally.
According to Mr. Abdul Karim Conteh, Director of Occupational Safety and Health at the Ministry of Employment
“Sierra Leone’s participation reflects its commitment to strengthening national OSH standards and safeguarding workers’ rights to safe and healthy working conditions.’’
He also noted that a major stride in this direction is the ongoing review of outdated labour legislation, particularly the Factories Act of 1974. At the legal drafting stage,
This process is expected to culminate in enacting a new Occupational Safety and Health Act, which will modernize the existing legal framework to align with international standards and best practices. He stated.
Key objectives of the conference included supporting the development of OSH policies aligned with international standards, enhancing member states’ capacity to manage health risks, and fostering global partnerships. Delegates also discussed climate change, mental health, and other pressing workplace safety issues.
The GOSH7 conference concluded with a call for continued collaboration through follow-up workshops, the creation of regional task forces, and the development of a global OSH framework aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Mr. Conteh expressed optimism that insights gained from the conference would strengthen Sierra Leone’s efforts to institutionalize occupational safety and health across all sectors.
