Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has on Thursday, June 26, 2024 visited the Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess in Kingtom, purposely to strategize on reducing corrupt practices within the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).
The ACC team, led by Deputy Commissioner Augustine Foday Ngobie, expressed appreciation for the police’s efforts in crime reduction. However, Ngobie pointed out that the actions of some officers are undermining these achievements.
He stressed the importance of collaboration, particularly regarding training and in-service training, to effectively combat corruption within the force.
Mr. Joshua Nicole, a Board Member of the ACC, referenced a recent Afrobarometer survey that ranked the SLP as one of the most corrupt institutions in the country. Despite this, he acknowledged the police’s progress in crime reduction and proposed joint training programs to address issues of corruption directly.
In response, IGP Sellu welcomed the ACC’s initiative and reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the police’s image. He noted that the SLP has already implemented measures to combat corruption, including dismissals and sanctions against officers found guilty of corrupt practices.
Sellu also asserted the roles of the Integrity Management Committee (IMC) and the Complaint, Discipline, and Internal Investigation Department (CDIID) as essential components in the fight against corruption. He expressed his determination to work closely with the ACC to develop effective strategies for tackling these issues.
Other ACC Board Members praised the SLP for its efforts in maintaining safety and security in Sierra Leone, encouraging the police to continue their commendable work.
