Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), with support from UNDP, has initiated a programme to upgrade its garment factory at Kingtom Police Barracks and other key facilities as part of a broader modernization agenda.
A joint team of senior police officers and UNDP technical experts recently conducted a comprehensive survey of the factory to assess current conditions, identify operational gaps, and develop a plan to transform it into a modem, efficient operation aligned with the vision of the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, to shift from traditional policing towards a service-oriented institution.
led by Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Esther Mary Kaintor- Dukuray, the team evaluated the factory’s equipment and infrastructure, with the aim of improving operational standards and capacity.
Commissioner Ishmael Keita emphasised that this initiative forms part of the police’s strategic transition, noting that the factory’s experienced staff are capable of meeting modern demands. A concept note outlining the factory’s proposed transformation has been prepared for consideration by the police’s Executive Management Board.
During the visit, UNDP official Madam Olubukola Bola and her team engaged with factory management, including ACP Alhaji K. Bangura, who outlined current capabilities and challenges. The delegation also toured Wilberforce Police Station to assess existing facilities, in line with plans to develop a modern police station as a pilot project for the ongoing reform programme. Further assessments were conducted at Aberdeen Police Station, examining, the recently constructed facility designed to meet contemporary policing standards.
This comprehensive reviev, demonstrates the police’s commitment to reform and modernisation, with the overarching goal of enhancing public trust and confidence through improved infrastructure and service delivery. The initiative is part of IGP’s Sellu effort to upgrade police facilities across the country in accordance with modern policing standards.
