It was reported that, the acting Speaker Honourable Sengepoh Solomon Thomas directed the Minister of basic education to provide MPs with a detailed explanation for the closure of the online registration portal of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), which has left thousands of pupils across the country unable to register for the WASSCE 2024 which has caused a serious debate among members of Parliament after Hon.Jabbie, chairman of the Education Committee expressed his concern over a social media video released by Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara which contains allegations against the Ministry and WAEC.

In the argument thus, Hon. Jabbie challenged the claim made by Hon.Kamara on the

Number of students unable to register for the exam and the alleged regional disparities in school registration.

He maintained that 146,179 candidates had been registered for WASSCE 2024, although he could not specify the number of pupils who missed registration.

In his statement, the Deputy Leader of the All People’s Congress Party (APC) Hon. Aaron Koroma urged Parliament to handle the situation professionally devoid from politics as it has a greater impact for the future of the country.

Speaking on the matter, Hon. Hawa Siaffa of SLPP called on school authorities to be professional and maintain accountability in their job despensation, adding that, the pupils should not be punished for what they do not understand.

Hon. Mohamed Bangura of the APC also asked for a given opportunity to let Hon. Kamara have his claims clearly presented and get the real account of his own part for a clear justification.

The matter was however adjourned to the 16th April, 2024
