The Executive of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) paid a courtesy visit to the Indian High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Baisnab Charan Pradhan, in line with the Association’s longstanding tradition of engaging diplomatic partners. on Thursday, 13th November 2025.
During the visits, Ambassador Pradhan expressed his appreciation for the work of the media in Sierra Leone, noting that it continues to uphold responsible and ethical journalism compared to many other countries.
He highlighted the strong and cordial relationship the Embassy has enjoyed with the media over the years and recalled that several Sierra Leonean journalists have benefited from study opportunities in India. The Ambassador further stated that India remains committed to supporting Sierra Leone’s economic development, pointing to the establishment of various Indian businesses across the country.
Furthermore, Ambassador Pradhan noted that more Indian investors are expected in Sierra Leone to establish manufacturing companies that will create jobs and contribute significantly to the national economy. He added that some Indian companies are already producing high-quality building and household materials, including the newly established iron ore and roofing zinc factory, while another company is preparing to supply energy to the national grid. He emphasised that peace and stability in Sierra Leone remain strong incentives for increased Indian investment.
President of SLAJ, Alhaji Manika Kamara, expressed gratitude for the long-standing friendship between SLAJ and the High Commission, describing the relationship as mutually beneficial.
He informed the Ambassador that the media sector is in urgent need of capacity building, stressing the importance of equipping journalists with modern skills in digital reporting, investigative journalism, fact-checking, ethical standards, and new media tools. He emphasized that SLAJ is neither a mouthpiece for the government nor an opposition entity, but a development partner committed to training journalists to provide timely and accurate information to the public.
The SLAJ President appealed for the Ambassador’s support in encouraging Indian investors to consider investing in the media sector, particularly in printing materials, broadcast equipment, and other essential media technologies. He also called for more specialised training opportunities in digital literacy and online media to strengthen the profession.
In response, Ambassador Pradhan assured the delegation of India’s willingness to support journalism training programs and media exchange initiatives. He encouraged SLAJ to develop and submit a project proposal clearly outlining priority areas for collaboration.
