Sports Minister Reveals Reasons Behind Delays in National Stadium Completion

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. During a recent visit to the Siaka Stevens Stadium, Sports Minister Madam Augusta James-Teima addressed the pressing concerns regarding the delays in the completion of renovations at Sierra Leone’s premier sports facility.

The visit, which took place on Thursday, April 17, 2025, included officials from the Ministry of Works, the National Sports Authority, the National Olympic Committee, and the Sierra Leone Football Association.

Minister James-Teima acknowledged the importance of the stadium as a national asset and highlighted the critical issues contributing to the delay. One of the main challenges is the requirement for seating installation, as mandated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

She noted that the tender process for these vital installations is currently underway, emphasizing the need for adherence to international standards.

“The delay in completing the stadium renovation is largely due to the complexities involved in fulfilling the necessary requirements, particularly the installation of proper seating,” explained James-Teima. “Without meeting these standards, we cannot adequately prepare to host international matches, which are essential for our national pride and the morale of our teams.”

The Minister also pointed out the significant role the stadium plays in enhancing local economies. She expressed concern over the negative impact of hosting games abroad, which disconnects the Leone Stars from their home supporters and diminishes the overall experience for fans. “When our national team plays outside of Sierra Leone, they are deprived of the home support that truly inspires peak performance. Furthermore, holding matches at home benefits our local vendors and creates employment opportunities within our communities,” she stated.

Moreover, during her visit, James-Teima commended the Chinese construction firm, Ghanzou Company, for their transparency and cooperative efforts that allow stakeholders and the public to track the stadium’s progress. “This stadium is a national treasure. We must finish it to the highest quality so our nation can enjoy its full benefits,” she added.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to the project, the Minister assured citizens that officials are working diligently to expedite the remaining processes. “The Siaka Stevens Stadium is crucial for the country’s sports landscape and national pride. We are dedicated to overcoming these challenges and ensuring that we bring football back home,” she concluded.

As stakeholders remain hopeful for a resolution, the commitment from the Ministry of Sports underscores a collective desire to revitalize Sierra Leone’s sports heritage through the completion of this landmark facility.
