Tension in Bassatown Over Alleged School Land Sale

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Tension gripped Bassatown today after pupils of the Rural Education Committee (REC) Primary School staged a protest over the alleged sale of their school land to a Lebanese national. The demonstration attracted community members, education stakeholders, and local authorities, who swiftly intervened to restore calm.

Eyewitnesses said the pupils, joined by some residents, expressed anger after learning that part of the school’s property had allegedly been sold without proper consultation. The news quickly spread, prompting spontaneous demonstrations demanding answers and accountability.

Local authorities, including the District Council Chairman and the Local Unit Commander (LUC), engaged with community leaders, school officials, and the aggrieved pupils to defuse the situation. Police later arrested two individuals believed to be linked to the alleged land transaction as investigations continue.

Community members have called on the Ministry of Lands and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education to urgently intervene, verify ownership documents, and ensure that the land remains under the school’s control.

As calm gradually returns to Bassatown, residents insist that justice must prevail to prevent similar incidents that could undermine education in their community.
