Violence Erupts During SLPP Elections in Constituency 131

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Tensions erupted on Saturday, 7th June, 2025 during the lower-level executive elections of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in constituency 131, leading to the cancellation of the entire electoral process.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that disputes over delegate accreditation and allegations of bias and forgery sparked significant unrest among supporters of competing factions.

The atmosphere turned volatile when several delegates were reportedly barred from entering the voting hall.

This reportedly prompted protests and accusations of foul play, making it unsafe for election officials to continue with the proceedings. As a result, they made the decision to call off the elections.

Further complicating the situation, three delegates from the zonal executives, who had resigned from their positions to contest for constituency executive roles but ultimately lost, were allegedly allowed to serve as delegates.

This practice contradicts the SLPP Rules and Regulations and the Party Constitution, which stipulate that individuals who contest for higher positions must vacate their previous roles, regardless of the election outcome.

Concerns were raised regarding delegate authenticity. One delegate from Zone 10, identified as Edmond Sidikie, was reported to be out of the country.

Allegations surfaced that his documents were forged to allow another individual to represent him. Similar forgery claims were made regarding two other delegates, raising suspicions of attempts to manipulate the election results.
