Young Innovators in Sierra Leone Launch Portable Learning Hub to Boost Education in Remote Areas

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. A team of young Sierra Leone entrepreneurs is making progress in digital education through the development of an innovative offline solution to bridge the learning gap in less privileged communities.

Chief Minister, Dr. Moinina Sengeh’s students presented the “Digital Learning Hub in a Bag” at the ECOWAS Human Capital Development Conference in Accra, Ghana, representing Sierra Leone.

According to reports, the portable offline hub provides high-quality digital learning content to remote and connectivity-challenged regions of Sierra Leone, addressing infrastructure barriers that cause harm to education. The initiative was supported by the Directorate of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI), UNICEF, and the Peace Corps.

In another development, Chief minister Sengeh met with Lovetta Bangura, his former student during the event. Lovetta co-founded EasyStem, a team said to be dedicated to increasing access to STEM education in Sierra Leone. The idea said to have arose from Dr. Sengeh’s Engineering Entrepreneurship and Innovation class, which has created a number of student-led companies over the last five years.

Dr. Sengeh, who was in attendance, acknowledged the teams’ efforts by saying,

“I am super proud of Lovetta Bangura, my former student who co-founded EasyStem, with other students from my Engineering Entrepreneurship and Innovation class.” He said.

“With support from DSTI, UNICEF, Peace Corps, their “Digital Learning Hub in a Bag” –an offline, portable innovation designed to bring high-quality digital education to remote communities, regardless of connectivity or infrastructure- is already impacting lives in Sierra Leone. They are delivering.”
