TRIBUTE has been paid to the chairman of One World Link (OWL) in Sierra Leone following his unexpected death.

The sudden passing of Alfred Maada Fobay – known to friends as Maada – came as a shock to family and friends in the Bo district of the West African country and also to his many friends from OWL in Warwick and Leamington.

The friendship link between the two districts was established more than 40 years ago. There are 15 schools in the area with links to schools in the Bo district, with regular exchange visits taking place between them. There are also links and shared projects related to health, planning, and waste management.

Richard Hall, chair of OWL in Warwick district, said: “Maada was a well-respected figure in his local community but was also admired and respected in the UK.

“He played a lead role in many of the activities with which OWL is involved and made many visits to the UK. He will be remembered not just for his intelligence and sound advice in understanding cultures but will be sadly missed for the friendship he gave to many and for the person he was.”
