Africa-Press – South-Africa. It was business as usual at Gauteng schools as learning continued uninterrupted amid a planned national shutdown on Wednesday.

Unions and left-leaning organisations from around South Africa were set to mobilise on Wednesday to protest against load shedding, wage suppression, and the rising cost of living.

The protests are being led by the country’s largest labour federations – the South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) and the ANC-aligned Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu).

However, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said it was business as usual at the province’s schools.

Wednesday’s national shutdown probably won’t draw large protest crowds, Vavi acknowledges

“We have received positive reports from our districts across the province, stating that learning and teaching have not been disrupted at schools,” he said.

“However, our districts have communicated a challenge of average learner attendance at some schools. Therefore, we appeal to parents and guardians to ensure their children attend class on all schooling days.”

Lesufi appealed for schooling to remain uninterrupted as matric pupils were preparing for preliminary examinations.

“As it stands, we have limited teaching days before learners write their final examinations,” said Lesufi.
