Scent to the doghouse: Ruff day for theft suspects collared after police dog sniffs them out

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A police dog in Pretoria has helped sniff out the alleged thieves of around R2 million in stolen goods.

On Friday, officers from the Tshwane Search and Rescue Team, along with K9 dog Aida, were reportedly out searching for a missing person in a veld in Irene when they were alerted to the fact that armed suspects were in the area.

“According to a preliminary report, [a] truck driver and his crew were making their way from Kempton Park to Silverton when they were confronted by four suspects,” said Gauteng police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.

“The suspects then allegedly drove off with their victims in the hijacked truck.”

Once in Irene, the driver and crew were ordered to offload the cargo, made up mostly of paint, with an estimated value of R2 million.

The suspects allegedly fled on foot in different directions, but three were apprehended shortly afterwards by Aida and the officers. The fourth suspect is still at large.

Masondo said: “A search led the SAPS members to recover one unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as one imitation firearm.”

The three alleged robbers, aged between 24 and 34, will face charges of truck hijacking, kidnapping, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
