Africa-Press – South-Africa. More suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of an off-duty police officer in Mabopane, Pretoria, last Saturday.
They appeared in the Magistrate’s Courts in Ga-Rankuwa and Soshanguve on Friday on charges of murder, house robbery, possession of stolen property and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
A joint police operation led to the arrests of Bongani “Rara” Mabena, Joseph “Mjozi” Makhubele and Paul Muchesa.
Police also arrested Alpheus Ggwamanda for the possession of a stolen television, which was allegedly found at his electronics shop.
The men were arrested in Winterveld and Mabopane.
Sergeant Tumelo Losaba was shot dead by armed robbers at his home early last Saturday morning.
The men ordered him to hand over the keys to a Toyota RAV4, but he threw them into the yard. He was then forced into the house, and his family threatened and locked in the bathroom.
“They demanded money, cellphones and bank cards while the other [suspects] removed a plasma television from the wall. When the chaos seemed to have quietened, the sergeant quickly got into his room and emerged with his service pistol.
“As he approached the kitchen door, he noticed one of the suspects still in the house. They exchanged gunfire, and the suspect, now known as Chris Mazeti, was fatally wounded,” said Hawks spokesperson Lloyd Ramovha.
One of the attackers killed the officer and sped off in a grey-silver Audi A4.
At the time of his death, Losaba was attached to the Rapid Rail Police Unit in the Mabopane corridor.
The case is expected back in court on 18 November.
