Africa-Press – South-Africa. After intense grilling during which his integrity was called into question, State witness Tumelo Madlala finally finished testifying on Friday in the trial into the murder of his childhood friend, former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa.
Madlala, who was cross-examined at length during the trial in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, was at the Vosloorus house where Meyiwa was shot dead on 26 October 2014.
According to Madlala’s testimony, he and others at the house were watching a soccer match on television between Manchester United and Chelsea when intruders entered.
He maintained that Bongani Ntanzi, one of the five accused, was one of the intruders on the day.
Madlala was asked whether he recognised Ntanzi from media reports, and he responded: “I have never seen this person before. The only time I had seen him was in the house when Senzo was killed.”
In response to a question from State advocate George Baloyi, he said he called Meyiwa’s brother, Sifiso, shortly after the shooting. Previously, he said he called Sifiso while he was at Botshelong hospital, where Meyiwa received medical attention.
Madlala was one of the people approached for an interview for a Netflix documentary on the footballer’s murder. He told the court that he shared information and pictures with a production company that worked on the documentary.
On Friday, he told the court he didn’t know when the documentary would be aired.
During cross-examination earlier this week, Madlala was accused of betraying Meyiwa’s trust by working on the documentary.
The case continues on Monday when a new witness is expected to be called.
Ntanzi, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Mthobisi Ncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Fisokuhle Ntuli are on trial for the murder.
