Africa-Press – South-Africa. Gauteng province welcomed 167 babies on 1 January 2023.

During her visit to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital on New Year’s Day, Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo–Ralehoko said the babies were born between midnight and noon.

Nkomo–Ralehoko celebrated and presented mothers with gifts.

“We are encouraging all the mothers who have just delivered their bundles of joy to use the Department of Home Affairs offices that are in-house at our facilities to register their babies before going home. We also encourage them to breastfeed their babies for the first six months exclusively. Breast milk contains all the nutrition and antibodies babies need to grow and protect them from illnesses,” she said.

“They must also ensure that their little ones are immunised regularly to protect them against diseases such as polio, hepatitis, measles and meningitis.”

Academic hospitals in the province delivered 15 babies.

Seven were born at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, and four were delivered at the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital.

Tertiary hospitals delivered 25 babies.

Tembisa Hospital welcomed 20 babies, and five babies were born at Kalafong Hospital.

Other babies were born at various facilities in the province.

Last year, Gauteng recorded 150 babies born on New Year’s Day between midnight and midday.

According to the SABC, 1 764 babies – 894 girls and 870 boys – were born at healthcare facilities across the country on New Year’s Day last year.
