Africa-Press – South-Africa. A group of people burgled and damaged a Gauteng primary school, and stole essential items.

Burglars broke into MC Weiler Primary School in Alexandra on 3 January and fled, taking food and learning materials.

The spokesperson for the Gauteng education department, Steve Mabona, said the thieves stole large LED lights, air-conditioners, science kits and stationery, including pencil crayons, glue sticks, pencils and flip files.

“Further reports state that several windows were broken or removed, and electricity cables were stolen. The suspects broke burglar guards to gain access to the school’s kitchen, where food for the start of Term 1 was stolen, together with a microwave and kitchen utensils,” said Mabona.

They also vandalised the school’s library doors and the shatterproof glass surrounding the library.

“To this end, a lot of maintenance work and repairs need to be done. The burglary was reported to the police. This is concerning, as schools are preparing to open for the academic year on 11 January,” said Mabona.
