Africa-Press – South-Africa. Frene Ginwala’s nephew, Zavareh Rustomjee, says the first speaker of South Africa’s democratic Parliament shared her life with her family and the ANC.
Ginwala, who served in the National Assembly from 1994 until retirement in 2004, died on Thursday after suffering a stroke two weeks ago. She was 90.
Speaking outside Ginwala’s home in Sandton, Johannesburg, alongside ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula and spokesperson Pule Mabe, Rustomjee said the family was proud of her contribution to the country’s politics and the ruling party.
“It’s a sad day for the family and our country. We should be celebrating her life. They don’t make them like they used to. We had to share her. She had two families – ours and the movement. She was kind and caring to us, and we are honoured and proud of her contribution,” Rustomjee said.
Mbalula lauded Ginwala’s contribution to the fight for freedom and equality.
He added:
Mbalula said the family would hold a private cremation on Saturday, after which the ANC would host an official service. On Sunday, ANC leaders were planning a programme to celebrate Ginwala’s legacy.
“It was a well-lived life that needs to be celebrated. There is a lot that we, the current generation at the helm of the movement, can learn from the life and times of comrade Frene,” said Mbalula.
