Africa-Press – South-Africa. A congregant foiled a robbery at mosque in Kensington, Johannesburg at around 21:00 on Tuesday when he shot two of the suspects dead.
Two others, including a police officer, were wounded during the incident.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said information at their disposal indicated that three men had arrived at the mosque with the intention of robbing it.
But the congregant quickly stopped them by firing shots at them, killing two of them in the process.
According to Sello, “an unknown person” opened fire on police after they arrived at the scene, and they retaliated.
“During this shootout, two people, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds. Both victims were taken to hospital for medical assistance,” said Sello.
One person was arrested.
Police are investigating two murder cases, two attempted murder cases and an attempted business robbery case.
